On June 28th, 2017 Saint Isaac’s Cathedral saw the 203rd Graduation Ceremony of Russia’s first transport university’s graduates — Emperor Alexander I St. Petersburg State Transport University.

In 2017, PGUPS graduated more than 1200 engineers, Bachelor, Master and PhD holders. The most assiduous three hundred of them were awarded diplomas with honours in the State Memorial Museum «Saint Isaac’s Cathedral».

The place for the ceremony was not chosen by accident. Saint Isaac’s Cathedral harmonises artistic component of an outstanding architect Auguste de Montferrand and genius engineering decisions of Agustin de Betancourt, the first Rector of our university. Since its foundation, the Cathedral has always been a state institution: the expenditures for its engineering and maintenance have been borne by the state budget. During its more than a century and a half history, significant events took place in the Cathedral. This tradition continues in XXI century.

The ceremony was opened by the Director of the Cathedral Mr. Alexander Kvyatkovsky:

«Saint Isaac’s Cathedral is a temple of art and science. It is connected with Emperor Alexander I St. Petersburg State Transport University by the name of Agustin de Betancourt, a great engineer uniting the entire engineering society».

The bannermen solemnly carried in the National Flag and the Flag of Saint-Petersburg. Vice-Governor Mr. Vladimir Kirillov congratulated the graduates, professors and teachers of the university and read out a welcome speech by the Governor of Saint-Petersburg Mr. Georgy Poltavchenko.

The Rector of PGUPS Mr. Alexander Panychev underlined that the diplomas with honours were the peak that they all had been reaching all years of studying; the university is proud of them. He pointed out that being awarded a diploma under the dome of the Cathedral was very symbolic.

«Here more than twenty unique engineering decisions of our first Rector Agustin de Betancourt found their embodiment. Moreover, through the entire period of construction (it lasted forty years) students would sharpen their skills and apply their knowledge gained at the Institute of Transport Engineers» — Mr. Rector said.

During the ceremony, a welcome speech and a statement on awarding the most assiduous graduates of PGUPS insignia «For honours» by Russia’s Minister of Transport and Co-Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the University Mr. Maksim Sokolov was read out. The awards were given by Director of State Railway Policy Department, our alumnus, Mr. Vyacheslav Petrenko.

The graduates were awarded diplomas by transport branches’ and city’s enterprises’ directors and managers. The ceremony was also attended by Chairperson of the Committee on Science and High School of Saint-Petersburg Mr. Andrei Maksimov, Head of October Railway Mr. Vladimir Goloskokov, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Transoil company Mr. Igor Romashov, Head of the North-West Branch of the Federal Agency for Railway Transport Mr. Nikita Kamenir, Head of Saint-Petersburg Metro Mr. Vladimir Garyugin, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of NIIEFA-ENERGO, LLC Mr. Alexander Mizintsev, Deputy Director, Technical Director of the Western High-Speed Diameter, Mr. Semyon Suponitsky, and the honoured citizen of Saint-Petersburg Mr. Vladimir Alexandrov.

On receiving a diploma, many alumni go to work in the country’s biggest transport company — Russian Railways. Head of October Railway Mr. Vladimir Goloskokov presented the alumni with a symbolic employment record book.

Nine of the alumni received certificates on awarding the Agustin de Betancourt Prize, the highest mark of hard-working studies. The decision on awarding the prize is made by the Scientific Council of the university.

The Graduation day was organised within the Agreement on Cooperation between PGUPS and the State Memorial Museum «Saint Isaac’s Cathedral». The Agreement is realised under the auspices of the International Scientific and Educational Project «Heritage of Betancourt».

The Project was initiated by the three institutions whose history is connected with Betancourt: the Technical University of Madrid (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), the National Bridges and Roads School (École nationale des ponts et chaussées), and Emperor Alexander I St. Petersburg State Transport University.
