Midday Shot Made in Honour of Betancourt

February 1st, 2018 marked 260th anniversary of the founder and the first Rector of our university Agustin Betancourt. A number of memorial events was devoted to this date.

The day of ceremony started with laying wreaths of flowers at Agustin Betancourt’s bust in Obukhovskaya Square in front of the university. The ceremony was attended by the Head of Federal Agency for Railway Transport Vladimir Chepets, Rector of PGUPS Alexander Panychev, the Head of the Northwest Territorial Administration Nikita Kamenir, Rector of the Technical University of Madrid Guillermo Cisneros Perez, Professor of le CNAM, Paris, Michel Bera, Director of Central Railway Transport Museum Vladimir Mitilenko, and Vice-Rectors and students of the university.

The flowers were also laid at Betancourt’s grave in Saint Alexander Nevsky Lavra.

In honour of the outstanding engineer, scientist, statesman and teacher, a midday shot from a cannon in Peter and Paul’s Fortress’s Naryshkin Bastion in honour of Betancourt was made. The shot was made by Rector of the university Alexander Panychev. The ceremony was attended by the Head of Federal Agency for Railway Transport Vladimir Chepets, Consul General of the Kingdom of Spain in Saint Petersburg Juan Antonio Martínez-Cattáneo y Hingston, as well as by representatives of higher educational institutions of France and Spain.

The ceremonial events will be later continued at the university.
