Rector-Headed Delegation of PGUPS Visits Riga Marking Onset of Mutual Work with Latvian Railways

From February 23d till February 24th, 2017 the delegation of PGUPS represented by Rector Alexander Panychev and Vice-Rector for International and Public Relations, Doctor Igor Kiselev visited Riga, the Republic of Latvia.

The delegation visited the Authority Office of Latvian Railway where they had talks with the Chairman of the Board of Directors, President of SJSC «Latvian Railways» Mr. Edvins Berzins, Member of the Board, Vice-President Mr. Ēriks Šmuksts, and HR Department Director Ms. Lolita Smiltniece.

Latvia possesses the longest railway network among the Baltic States, stretching over 1800 km. 250 km of them are electrified with 3Kw direct current (generally, Riga and its suburbs). Currently, the Latvian railway electrification project is being developed. The electrification is expected to start first of all from the main directions of the country’s railway network.

In Soviet times, most of Latvian railway staff was trained in LIIZT (former name of PGUPS). There was also the affiliate of LIIZT there. Now, railway engineers are trained in Riga Technical University, upgrade qualification courses are given in the Railway training centre. The Authority of Latvian Railways expressed their great interest in bringing in specialists from PGUPS for training and upgrading Latvian Railway staff using distance education in the English language. During talks both sides also considered bilateral research work.

Finally, consent for preparation of a mutual Agreement on Cooperation was reached. Rector Alexander Panychev invited the Authority of Latvian Railways to visit PGUPS at any suitable time. The invitation was kindly accepted.
