The PGUPS and Oktyabrskaya Railway Began Collaborative Work on Development of Approaches to the Ports of North-West Russia

In August 2016 professors, postgraduate students and Master’s degree students of the PGUPS made a trip to Murmansk, where they got acquainted with the current state and prospects of development of the Murmansk transport hub. The trip was a prelude to the creation of a project office «Development of Approaches to the Ports of North-West Russia» within the framework of cooperation between the PGUPS and Oktyabrskaya Railway – branch of JSC «Russian Railways».

For ten years, our University conducts research work on the development of approaches to the ports of North-West region. Recently, the University and Oktyabrskaya Railway signed an agreement on cooperation and joint work plan for the period of 2016-2018. The agreement stipulated the decision to establish a project office «Development of Approaches to the Ports of North-West Russia». Professors and lecturers of the PGUPS, as well as stuff of Oktyabrskaya Directorate for Traffic Management and Oktyabrskaya Directorate for Infrastructure will be involved in this project.

Creation of the project office is a continuation of the joint activities of the University and Oktyabrskaya Railway on the development of Ust-Luga transport hub – the most modern railway-port complex in Russia. This activity is carried out since 2013 with the support of the First Vice-President of JSC «Russian Railways» Anatoliy A. Krasnoshok.

During his visit to Murmansk, Oktyabrskaya Railway provided experts of the PGUPS an opportunity to examine the existing facilities and to obtain the information about stations Vihodnoy and Kola, to evaluate the options for train and shunting work in the hub proposed by PJSC «Lengiprotrans», to make sure of the need to enhance the near approaches to Murmansk, including due to the construction and electrification of the second sections of the main railways on the area Apatity – Murmansk. Still difficult aspect remains the task of ensuring the necessary transport capacity on the line St. Petersburg – Murmansk for the development of the planned freight traffic.
