II International Scientific Conference «RILTTRANS-2017»: Excursion to Ust-Luga Transport Hub

On October 6th, 2017 participants of the Conference «RILTTRANS-2017» familiarised themselves with the work of Ust-Luga Transport Hub. Among the visitors there were also students of the Faculty of Railway Operation and Logistics.

The programme of the visit included North Industrial Park, Rosterminalugol Coal Terminal and Shunting yard.

Chief Engineer of the station Mr. A.B. Zakharov acquainted the visitors with the work of the hub as well as its history and plans of development.

Luga Railway Station serves Ust-Luga Commercial Sea Port located on the Southern coast of the Gulf of Finland. The port facilities were constructed on reclaimed alluvial territories. Today, Luga Station comprises four parks: North Luga, South Luga, Luga General and Luga Freight Yard. The station stretches for 25 km, with a total length of station tracks of 252 km.

North Luga neigbours three terminals: Rosterminalugol Coal Terminal, Multipurpose Reloading Complex, European Sulfur Terminal. In addition, North Luga serves transit purposes for trains running to other parks of Luga Station neighbouring JSC «Sibur-port energo», Luga Freight Yard and Ust-Luga Station.

The guests visited Rosterminalugol Coal Terminal where they saw automated processes of coal unloading, dumping, and work of transborders. Full cycle of unloading two carriages, from uncoupling to coupling of carriages, takes three minutes.

After visiting North Luga, the visitors saw work of the Shunting yard. PGUPS Alumnus 2014 Mr. A. Degtyaryov told the visitors about the process of shunting.

The Shunting yard comprises high capacity hump yard, receiving yard, transit yard, departure park, assembly area, and shunting yard with 44 tracks. The visitors watched the process of train shunting (normally it takes 15 minutes), and work of point retarders. The work of the hump locomotive is performed automatically - without driver’s engagement. After that, the guests were demonstrated work of automatic switching and work of shunting yard from the dispatcher tower.

Visit to Ust-Luga Transport Hub, which is a bright example of application of innovative and logistical technologies, was a good illustration of the issues discussed during the Conference «RILTTRANS 2017».
