PGUPS Graduation Day in St. Isaac’s Cathedral

On June 29, 2016, the State Museum «St. Isaac’s Cathedral» hosted the 202nd solemn graduation ceremony of Emperor Alexander I St. Petersburg State Transport University.

This year the PGUPS, which had trained more than 100,000 engineers during the two centuries of its history, opened the door to the future for 1,200 specialists, bachelors, and masters. The 270 best of them obtained their diplomas with honours under the dome of St. Isaac’s Cathedral.

The venue for the ceremony, which was visited by 2,000 professors, lecturers, graduates and their parents, had been chosen deliberately. St. Isaac’s cathedral can be referred to as a temple of arts and sciences, where the artistic concept of architect Auguste de Montferrand and the engineering genius of the first rector of the University Agustin de Betancourt harmoniously balanced.

The ceremony was opened by the Director of the State Museum «St. Isaac’s Cathedral», Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation Nikolay Burov: «St. Isaac’s Cathedral and the Transport University are linked by the name of Agustin de Betancourt — a great engineer, inventor and creator, that has to consolidate the whole engineering community».

After the Anthem of the Russian Federation had been performed by the St. Petersburg Concert Choir, the Vice-Governor of the city Vladimir Kirillov addressed the audience, congratulated the graduates and extended the best wishes from the Governor of St. Petersburg, Co-Chairman of the PGUPS Board of Trustees Georgy Poltavchenko.

In his speech, the PGUPS Rector Alexander Panychev emphasized that the diplomas with honours, which were being handed in to the graduates by the well-known representatives of the transport organizations, are the summit that they had been striving to during the years of studies. «You were trying to follow the legacy of Betancourt, «the Russian Spaniard», and you have already reached a lot. We are sure that in your professional life you will choose the way of great achievements and we will always be proud of you!»

During the ceremony the order of the Russian Minister of Transport, Co-Chairman of the PGUPS Board of Trustees Maxim Sokolov was announced awarding the best graduates for the excellent studies. The awards were handed in by the Director of Administrative Department of the Ministry of Transport Konstantin Pashkov.

The following representatives of transport organizations took part in the ceremony handing in the diplomas: Vice-President of JSC «Russian Railways» Oleg Valinsky, Chairman of the Board of Logistic Group «Transoil» Igor Romashov, Head of North-West Division of Federal Agency of Railway Transport Vladimir Mitelenko, Head of St. Petersburg Metro Vladimir Garyugin, Chairman of the Board of «NIIEFA-ENERGO», Ltd Alexander Mizintsev, Deputy Head of JSC «Western High-Speed Diameter» Semyon Suponitsky.

The PGUPS Graduation Day was organized within the frames of cooperation agreement between the University and the State Museum «St. Isaac’s Cathedral», which is realized under the auspices of the International Scientific and Educational Project «Heritage of Betancourt». The Project, which is being implemented in advance of the 260th anniversary of the great scientist, architect and engineer, was initiated by the three universities whose history is closely connected with Betancourt: Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, École nationale des ponts et chaussées (Paris) and Emperor Alexander I St. Petersburg State Transport University.
