Restoration of Trinity Cathedral is Finishing

In Saint-Petersburg the restoration of the Trinity Cathedral is finishing.

The construction of the cathedral, which was christened in 1835, was supervised by Vasily Stasov and the Institute of the Transport Engineers Corps’ alumnus and later Chairman of the Committee for Buildings and Hydraulic works in St. Petersburg Pierru-Dominique Bazaine. It was him who solved the engineer task of strengthening columns and steadiness of the main dome. The calculation of constructions was made by another PGUPS’ alumnus — Pavel Melnikov.

Restoration works began in 1995. However, in August 2006 a fire starting from a restoration scaffolding collapsed the main dome and damaged smaller domes. The interior was blackened with soot.

From 2006 to 2011 the smaller domes and the Main dome were restored, fire-fighting systems were installed. From 2012 to 2015 the smaller western dome was restored as well as interiors of the western, northern side-altar and the central volume of the cathedral. The inner side of the Main dome’s drum and the central arch’s mural were restored, the fence was repaired. In 2016 the floors were and, owing to the old photos, the chandelier were restored.

The end of the restoration is finally getting closer. It is a great pleasure that the cathedral which was built by our alumni is regaining its glory and splendour.
